Having a goal is important

Having read a dozen of medium post about productivity, a lot of them were saying that having a system is more important than having goals. So taking the advice, I set up my daily system. But something just doesn’t felt right. I lack a sense of drive. Today I reevaluated my life and come out with the conclusion that while we should not pursue our goal daily, we need to have goals that drive us and give us a sense of purpose. Or else after completing your daily routine, you end up questioning yourself, why am I doing this?

So what are my goals of 2017? I don’t have any concrete goals now. But I do know that ultimately these are my goals in life.

  • Financial freedom
  • Ability to create products that will impact and change people’s life
  • Ability to influence people with my values

For financial freedom, I define it by having the ability to do whatever I want, to create whatever I want. Now, I have debts to repay and also I need to eat and survive. To do that I need to work, and when you work for someone, you don’t always get to do whatever you want. Thus my goal will be to sustain my life with enough passive or side income so that I can chose to work whatever I want. Another way is to have enough skills to freelancer to chose any project I want to do or create my own product.

For the ability to impact people life with my product, I see product like Google or Facebook where they have have tremendous impact on people’s life. Be it good or bad, people life’s are being change. I want to create a product that have this kind of reach and influence.

For influence, I have to spread values that I care deeply about. I believe that everything has a voice. The good has a voice and the bad has a voice too. If the good stop influencing and voicing out, by default the bad will take over. For that I need to know, what are the values I strongly believe in?
